Privacy Policy
Stacked is an iPhone app for ranking the books you've read by comparing them two at a time. It's made by J. Jackson Robinson ("we" or "us"). This policy explains what information Stacked collects, why, who else handles it, and the choices you have.
The short version
- We collect your email address to sign you in, and the books, rankings, and answers you put into Stacked.
- Your library and rankings are private to your account.
- We don't sell your information, show ads, or track you across other apps or websites.
- You can delete your account, and everything in it, from inside the app at any time.
What we collect
Your email address
Stacked signs you in with a one-time code sent to your email instead of a password. We use your email address to send those codes and, if we need to, to contact you about your account. We don't send marketing email.
Your library
The books you add, whether by searching, typing them in, or importing from Goodreads, and what you tell us about each one: whether you've read it, are reading it, or want to read it; fiction or nonfiction; its genre; and when and how it was added.
Your rankings and answers
For each book you rank: whether you liked it, thought it was fine, or didn't like it; where it sits in your Fiction or Nonfiction list; and every matchup answer you give (which of two books you liked more, or that they were too close to call), with the time you answered.
Goodreads imports
When you import a Goodreads export file, the file is read on your phone. Stacked sends us only each book's title, author, and ISBNs; the shelf it's on (such as read or to-read); a genre or fiction/nonfiction label if one of your shelves names one; and the date you finished it. Your Goodreads star ratings, reviews, and private notes stay in the file and are never sent to us.
Searches
What you type into Search is sent to our server, which passes it to the book catalogs described below to find matching books. We don't keep a history of your searches.
Sign-in and service records
Our hosting provider records when you sign in, and the IP address and device type of each signed-in session, to keep accounts secure. Like most online services, its servers also keep short-lived technical logs of requests, which can include your IP address.
What we don't collect
Stacked doesn't use advertising, analytics, or tracking tools, and it doesn't ask for your contacts, location, photos, or advertising identifier.
The shared book catalog
When you add a book that isn't in Stacked yet, its details (title, author, ISBN, and cover) join a shared catalog that everyone using Stacked can search. Stacked doesn't show other people who added a book. If you delete your account, the books you added stay in the catalog with no link to you.
How we use information
Only to run Stacked: to sign you in, store and show your library and rankings, choose matchups, look up book details and covers, keep the service secure, and fix problems. We don't sell or rent your information, use it for advertising, or share it with anyone for their own marketing.
Who else handles it
We use a few service providers to run Stacked. They handle information only as needed to provide their services to us.
- Supabase hosts our database, sign-in system, and server code in the United States. It stores everything described above.
- Resend delivers the sign-in code emails, so it receives your email address and the emails we send you.
- Google Books and Open Library supply book details, covers, and search results. Our server sends them book titles, authors, ISBNs, and the words you search for, but not your email address or anything else that identifies your account. Cover pictures load straight from Google and Open Library to your phone, like images on a web page, so those services receive your phone's IP address and which covers are shown. Their own privacy policies apply to that information.
- Apple distributes Stacked through the App Store and TestFlight. If you test Stacked through TestFlight, Apple shares with us what TestFlight's terms describe, such as the email address you were invited with, feedback you send, and crash reports if you choose to share them.
- Cloudflare hosts this website and forwards email sent to our address below.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, such as in response to a valid court order, or when necessary to protect the safety, rights, or property of our users, the public, or Stacked. If Stacked is ever transferred to a new owner, your information would go with it and remain covered by this policy.
Who can see your library
Right now, your library, rankings, and answers are visible only to you. Future features, such as sharing your rankings, following friends, or writing reviews, will be your choice to use, and we'll update this policy before they arrive.
Keeping and deleting your information
- We keep your information for as long as you have an account.
- Clear my library (Profile → Start over) deletes all your books, both rankings, and your matchup history, and keeps your account.
- Delete my account (Profile → Account) permanently deletes your account and everything linked to it, right away.
- Our providers may keep logs or backups for a limited time before they're erased.
- On your phone, Stacked keeps you signed in until you sign out, delete your account, or remove the app.
Your choices and rights
You can see and change your library in the app at any time, and delete it or your whole account yourself. You can also email us to ask for a copy of your information, to correct it, or to delete it, and we'll respond within 30 days. Depending on where you live, you may have other rights over your personal information, including the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
If you're in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom: we use your information to provide the service you signed up for, and, for security and fixing problems, because of our legitimate interest in keeping Stacked working safely.
Where information is stored
Stacked's servers are in the United States. If you use Stacked from another country, your information is transferred to and stored in the United States.
Security
Information travels between the app and our servers encrypted. Database rules let each account read only its own library, rankings, and answers, and the keys that can reach everything stay on our servers, never in the app. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you if a breach affects it, as the law requires.
Children
Stacked isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change significantly affects how your information is used, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
